let me just start by saying that i had been put off reading thomas hardye by dickens. having really struggled with dickens and resorted to audio i had wrongly assumed that all 19c liturature was the same. how wrong i could be. from the first paragraph where the opening character farmer gabriel oak is desribed smiling, ‘the corners of his mouth spread till they were an unimportant distance from his ears‘ i fell in love with hardy‘s narrative. his ability to use words that lift the description off the page and into the reader‘s imagination are not just outstanding but incredibly enjoyable.

i went into this book blindly, knowing little about the plot that lay ahead or even the genre. it has been described by some as romantic fiction. but i think this is too simplistic a title and and maybe slightly off-putting to some. hardye steps into greek tragedy when the unwitting and churlish actions of our young protagonist, bathsheba everdene, result in a love tryst between three suitors with tragic consequenses.

the book is essentially a journey for bathsheba into womanhood not unlike the journey that scarlett o‘hara makes in gone with the wind who also has to overcome great tragedy in order to realise her own strength. unlike this heroin, however, bathsheba is more the instrument of chaos and indecion and part of her journey is that she accepts what she has caused and tries to make it right.

hardye avoids making this into moral stricture but deviates from the greek tragedy model by giving us a happy ending not atypical of 19c serialised fiction.

quite often an author‘s voice creeps into their writing and the reader becomes aware that they are not in fact walking the hills and dales of fictional wessex but are at the pen nib of a writ

the pilgrim"s progress can be said to be a very famous and very influential book in the christian literature and a lot of people have read it. actually when i first read the pilgrim"s progress i am not interested in it,even feel boring, and the result is i want to give up halfway. why, because i don"t have experience of the christian in this book. he encountered many difficulties, but i have not experienced, so i am not interested in it when i readied it.

as time goes by i read it more and more, and i began to feel deeply the process of christian struggling against difficulties. then i find all sorts of experience of protagonist christian is the mirror of most of ordinary people.

the difficulties he met, also is that we met. his failure was also that we had been through. and each time he regained faith, which also brought us a great joy and hope, because we also are the people who have pursuit and ideal.

from the knowledge level to see,the pilgrim"s progress is the most vitality predictions. this work is to write a virtual world, but it is the reality of the world in essence. this can make us more aware of the complexity behind the real world.

this work mainly displayed that human losing himself needed redemption, and only can be saved through confessing their iniquity and believing god. all kinds of people christian meet on the road are the people banyan met in any market, or any other streets in that era of britain. this is the reason that novel have b vitality.

reading this book, what make me feel touched and shock is that christian faithfully began his difficult lonely journey for the beliefs in his heart. all the way he went through despair mire, humiliation valley, the valley of the shadow of death, vanity fair, doubt fort, and all the way he defended entanglement of atheist, ignorance, mr. smart, mr. apple, mr. love money and so on,and finally came to the kingdom of heaven to pay a formal visit god.

did you ever have the experience like christian being overcome by difficulties?

did you ever same to feel very sad, and even discouraged?

let christian’ s words remind us once again:

my enemies!

do not rejoice over me,when i fall, i will rise up, i sit in darkness, and jehovah will be a light unto me.

although we are not christian, we can get a lot of valuable spiritual wealth from the christian. in order to the paradise of the heart, he insisted on their beliefs, had indomitable sprint, did not be afraid of all kinds of difficulties and hardships, and ultimately achieved himself ideal. in the process toward the pilgrim, the christian experienced all kinds of hardships and temptation, but the power of the spanine in his heart drove him constantly.

this is the power of faith. at each stage of the novel christian has experienced many tests, frustrated. at the same time, he also got edification, friendship, understanding and joy. this is life"s most precious wealth. only unswerving firmly believe that their beliefs, oneself will have the possibility of success. give up is not successful. in the fiction, soft wanted to follow the christian went to the kingdom of heaven, but while he encountered difficulty he hesitated and turned back. stubborn is so sure for everything, and he adhered others to accept his point of view, even he think himself he did not need the help of others, also did not need any guidance. succinct forthright language of christian shows that he was a man of determination and perseverance.

only such as christian, it will be possible to achieve their ideal. but, no one else will meet with difficulties. for example, in the valley of the shadow of death the heart of christian appeared straggliest and hesitation. christian had not set out on a journey yet and he was laughed at the family and the neighbor"s taunt.he met despair mire when he left not a long time. this kind of trouble continued until he reached the kingdom of heaven.

the way of going the kingdom of ideal heaven is not only bright and sunny, but also has the dark clouds. i think we can get some enlightenment from the book to solve problems we are facing today. christian started the journey to the kingdom of heaven. we saw him on the way to heaven, and in every step he was faced with choice weather continue or not. it also makes us associate that we are always faced with the same choice like christian in our current life journey.

the description is enough to tell everyone: faith is not a simple matter. faith is not spanersion, even more is not a easy way of recreation in our time. everyone ,who has the ideal and faith,is the need to pay the price. a belief is not allowed to be satisfied with a smattering of knowledge. beliefs demand people must devote your whole heart to the life of the whole to embrace that beautiful flame.

i felt that i was deeply fascinated by it soon after i had read it.

i first read it in a summer. i did not finish it at a single sitting. however, the moment i finished it, near midnight in a sweltering august day, with my body poured with sweat, held my breath to turn the last page over, shut the book and heaved a sigh of relief, i just could not express how i felt. all were over: trouble was over; lives were over; hopes were over. i was shocked how such a small book could contain such a complicated story. never were wars, diseases and starvation ever nakedly exposed to me like this. the turns in plots were surprising but natural.

it was a tragedy: just as its name suggested, everything was gone with the wind, including families’ touch, friends’ support, sweethearts’ gaze and youth with vigour. the story reminds us of valuing all we were possessing. a life lasts for a short time and anything in it lasts shorter. we always lose something unconsciously and then feel regretful when we need them later.

characters in the story were so vivid as if they had been going to jump out of the story, as if they had been existed in the real life at first.

“land is the only thing in the world that amounts to anything, for ‘this the only thing in this world that lasts, and don’t you be forgetting it’ this the only thing worth working for, worth fighting for——worth dying for.” said gerald, an irish man who loved his soil more than his own life, let us know that life can be born out of land.

“but scarlett, did it ever occur to you that even the most deathless love could wear out? mine wore out, against ashley wilkes and your insane obstinacy that makes you hold on like a bulldog to anything you think about.”

“scarlett, i was never one to patient pick up broken fragment glue them together and tell myself that the mended whole was as good as new. what is broken is broken——and i’d rather remember it as it was at its best than mend it and see the broken places as long as i lived.” said rett butler, a man who love scalett as much as a man can love a woman. loving her for years before he finally got her, he loved her crazily but did not let her know it for fear of being hurt. but at last he still could not escape from hurts. “my dear, i don’t give a damn.” look, he did not care about it at all. he was a man who disguised himself so much.

“i mustn’t bawl; i mustn’t beg. i mustn’t do anything risk his contempt. he must respect me even——even if he doesn’t love me.”

“i’ll think of it all tomorrow, at tara. i can stand it then. tomorrow, i’ll think some way to get him back. after all, tomorrow is another day.”

said scalett o’hara, the most wonderful woman i’ve ever seen. she was hard and greedy and unscrupulous, a brave, frightened, bull-headed child. though she only thought about how to attract man’s attention and did not do anything useful before the war, she did surprise me when i read about her doings after the war. at that time, her tara was just reduced to ashes. everyone sketched out their hands and asked her for food. she bravely faced the reality and rebuilt tara with her own hands. what a tough woman, i thought. though those she loved were all gone, she was still full of hope. when rett didn’t love her anymore and wanted to leave her, she said “i mustn’t bawl… even if he doesn’t love me.” a woman’s dignity could be seen from what she have said and done. that’s why i appreciate her.

this novel gave me too much to think about and i can not fully express myself in english. it is true that reading an origin is more vivid than the translated ones. however, my english level limits me to understand the origin well without the translated. but i will work hard in order to understand better.

the novel is my treasure, forever, because i find myself in scarlett and find the world i live in inside the story.

that’s really an excellent novel, with an ending from which you can see hope rising from despair.

little women is a novel published in 1868 and written by american author louisa may alcott. the story concerns the lives and loves of four sisters growing up during the american civil war. it was based on alcott's own experiences as a child in concord, massachusetts with her three sisters, anna, may, and elizabeth.

little women is the story of the marches, a family used to hard toil and suffering. although father march is away with the union armies, the sisters meg, jo, amy and beth keep in high spirits with their mother, affectionately named marmee. their friendly gift of a christmas holiday breakfast to a neighbouring family is an act of generosity rewarded with wealthy mr. laurence's gift of a surprise christmas feast. however, despite their efforts to be good, the girls show faults: the pretty meg becomes discontented with the children she teaches; boyish jo loses her temper regularly; while the golden-haired schoolgirl amy is inclined towards affectation. however, beth, who keeps the house is always kind and gentle. after certain happy times winning over the laurences, dark times arrive as marmee finds out about her husband's illness. worse is to come as beth contracts scarlet fever in her samaritan efforts for a sick neighbour and becomes more or less an invalid. the novel tells of their progress into young womanhood with the additional strains of romance, beth's terminal illness, the pressures of marriage and the outside world. this is the story of their growing maturity and wisdom and the search for the contentedness of family life. it was written in 1867 and is a fictionalised biography of alcott and her sisters. it has become a much loved classic tale and, while some of its issues seem outdated, many of the trials of the sisters are all too relevant today as evidenced by its continued following.

"little women" is an autobiographical nature of the family with a novel, the author is a u.s. aoerkete.

this book will be the main marchi is home to four different character of the girls through their own good and hard work to find their own well-being of the story's ups and downs of rock or no plot, no suspense spectacular, but by using plain language description of the marchi home tianlun love. are good, the love of family love and loyalty to the desire deeply touched me. the author describes only a very ordinary life in the details, but it is always exposed to love the vision of a better life.

we are born with a good family, but some bad quality, bully the weak and fear the strong, this kind of behavior is not good, like margaret, who was of humble origin, is holy. in this way, to be a good child!

i read the chinese version of “camille” a few years ago. at that time i was deeply moved by the main character marguerite gautier. “camille” or “the lady of the camellias” by alexandre dumas, fils, is the story of marguerite gautier, a young courtesan, or kept woman, in paris in the mid 1800's, and how she falls in love with a young man, armand duval, and then tries to escape from her questionable past. unfortunately, it comes back to haunt her and she ends up returning to that life and dies painfully and alone, but with the knowledge that she was a noble woman at heart. when i first began to read the book, i did not care for marguerite or her attitude or lifestyle, but as i got further into the narrative, i realized that her saucy attitude was a front to cover the lonely woman that she really was. she felt used, abused and unloved, until the gentle armand duval came into her life and showed her that he loved her as a person and not for what she could do for him. it must have taken great courage for marguerite to leave the life she had lived for so long, knowing all along that it was probably too good to be true and would not last indefinitely. and it also showed that marguerite really loved armand duval for she could even change herself for him.

however, happiness didn’t last for long. when m. duval, armand's father, came to her, pleading for her to leave armand to save both armand's reputation and that of his younger innocent sister, marguerite saw a way to become pure of heart, if not in body. she felt that it was her duty, because she loved armand so much, to do this even though it meant giving up her own happiness and hurting armand temporarily. she reluctantly returned to her former life, knowing that some day armand would forgive her. sadly, she died in debt and basically alone, except for her one female friend, julie duprat, who helped her during her illness. she had her journal sent to armand after her death, explaining why she had made the choices she had. i think dumas's last few lines about marguerite being the exception, not the rule were quite true, and i also agreed with his view that while her lifestyle could not be condoned, we as a society assume that all of these type of women are cold and heartless, while this may not always be the case. a person can make the wrong choices in life when they are young, and try to redeem themselves, but sometimes past situations prevent them from changing their lives, even though they desperately wish to do so. this applies to both men and women in many different types of circumstances: involvement in crime; drug or alcohol abuse; gambling; prostitution; financial problems; poor marriage choices; etc. and this is the fact, which exists in the whole society.

as far as the other characters in the book, i think marguerite was right in saying that no one truly cared about her, but only wanted something from her, the only exceptions being armand and julie duprat. of course, the comte de g. and comte de n. wanted her body and appearance. the duke needed to “wake up and smell the coffee” and realize that she could never replace his dead daughter. if he truly cared, he could have helped her leave her lifestyle without “keeping” her himself. and lastly, prudence was a blood-sucking leech who used marguerite almost worse than the men. i also think she was jealous of the fact that marguerite had so much more courage than herself and someone truly loved her.
